Google Adwords Phishing Scam

I thought it may be useful to post this quick article to warn others about the Google Adwords Email Phishing Scam.

One of my clients sent me an email saying there ads had stopped running and could i look into it as a matter of urgency. Well there ads were still running and reading the email you could tell it was a scam phishing email.

Things that stuck out were the…

1. Poor grammar (mine is shocking but not as bas as theres lol)

2. The link to Google Adwords – it was to another domain (yes it contained the word Google but only use the official Google adwords page to access your adwords account and not links in emails!)

3. The fact that it asked me to tell them if i thought they were wrong, Google never ask you this.

So be careful and only ever login through the proper Google Adwords home page

Focus on High Quality Links

5 of the top ranking factors are all generally agreed to be ‘off-site’ factors.

1 Keyword focused anchor text in external links
2 Quality of external link sources
3 Quantity of external links
4 Diversity of link sources
5 Link type and placement

The reason so many of the main ranking factors are offsite are down to the level of control we have over them. For example all of our onsite ranking factors are in our full control! So for the less scrupilous amongst us, the onsite ranking factors are open to our own levels of spam / manipulation.

When i manage SEO for clients i obviously first sort out there onsite optimisation, thats the easy part, secondly i have to introduce a link building strategy, thats the hard part (and most time consuming).

Interesting Fact: – Most of your competitors (except in top level niches e.g. insurance, comparison sites, job sites etc) really dont have anymore than 50 unique top level links coming into there site.

This means that if you embarked on a ‘high quality’ link building campaign, you’d only need to build 5 high quality links a month over the course of a year to beat your competitors to the top rankings in the search engines.

By high quality links i mean….

1.         Every link is relevant; non-paid (free), one-way, non-reciprocal, non-three-way, static and without “nofollow” to our website.

2.         All Links are from different Class-C IP addresses.

3.         Not blocked by robots.txt

4.         NO rented or bought links

5.         All link pages have a recent Google cache (within the last 4 weeks).

6.         No links on sites that have been banned or blacklisted by Google.

7.         Only first level domains (TLD & ccLD)

8.         Links have been manually created / submitted over a period of time.

9.         No directory submissions, No forum posts, No blog comments, No social bookmarks, No ping sites, No classified ads, No guest books, No link farms, No spam sites and No links within newsgroups.

10.       No java links, jump scripts, framed pages, redirects, cloaking, CSS redirects, 301 redirects, dynamic links, flash sites/pages, hidden links, no string parameters, session ID’s, etc.

11.       Any guest blog posts or articles are unique and verified unique by copyscape and only used once.

12.       Page on which the link is placed has no more than 100 outbound links.

13.       Links are not be labelled or titled sponsored, links, ads etc.

14.       Links are active, permanent with no expiration dates and must not need any payment.

15.       No fake PR sites

16.       Link pages are related.

17.       Text links only, no image-links

That’s a lot of criteria to stick to when sourcing high quality links!

You’ll obviously back this up with your usual link building through blog and forum comments aswell as reciprocal linking etc as while the SEO benefit isnt necessarily there, the traffic element is.

Internet Hardman + Negative Post = Strong Links

You know when you get that 8 stone wet through, got no mates, never had a girlfriend idiot write a negative post about your business online, its p*sses you off! (It currently hasnt happened to me, and please dont be the first to do it! LOL :) ) but i’ve seen it happen numerous times to various clients, especially those in service industries as unfortunately life is such you cant please everyone all of the time, no matter how hard you try and with the internet being a faceless medium it allows that idiot to all of a sudden become an ‘Internet Hardman’ and really lay into you.

Well for SEO’s this has created a nice new role, that of Reputation Management! I now personally look after several businesses reputations online and its a challenging job, but you know what? when i research my clients websites often these negative posts are the strongest links into a clients website they have! No BS!

You see, creating a ‘pillar article’ that encourages people to link into you is often one of the hardest tasks we have as an SEO (every SEO’d site should have pillar articels / categories), and managing reputation on other peoples websites is again a difficult job to do, so my advice is to create an area on your website that allows people to discuss your business in an open manner (your negative managed pillar article). You see people will always post negative sh*t, but if its on your site you can at least manage it to a certain level, OK to be really fair you shouldnt moderate all there posts deleting all the bad stuff and just leaving the good stuff, but you can at least reply on your own website. People also like to link to negative stuff, in fact more people will often refer people too and link to negative posts than to useful articles, i did have an example here but i dont want to single one business out, just drop me an email if you want to see this example.

So what i’m trying to get across here is that try and provide a medium online that people can use to express there feelings about your business, a kind of reverse testimonial page is how some might see it but an ‘open discussion forum where people can express there concerns’ is probably a better way to word it and you can then respond in an official manner here.

Remember…

Every site needs pillar articles / category pages and one of these can be an ‘express your opinion page’

If you find a negative post about your business online, dont use that site as a sort of unofficial response page / site, just aim to bury the site further down the rankings

Dont lose sleep over it, the more internet savvy of us are aware people will post negative stuff, as long as the positives out weigh the negatives it wont be a major problem

Accept that at least you’re getting a strong link lol

Employ a reputation management company (me if you like!!!) ideally before the negative stuff starts

Don’t be one of the 8 stone wet through, got no mates, never had a girlfriend idiots think about it first and address your issues with the company concerned, you know what they’ll probably bend over backwards to resolve your issues!

Rebranding my / your business

Back in late 2010 i decided to rebrand myself in the new year. I had been offering SEO services, SEO Training, Running various websites as well as affiliate marketing all under different banners. I decided to register a new company, new business bank account and rebrand myself under the name ChriSEO.

ChriSEO came about by a couple of different people referring to me as ChriSEO and i liked it and it kind of stuck!

Like you, i had several issues with rebranding myself, namely the consolidation of a number of websites into one. In the following blog posts i’ll show you the things you need to do when moving one (or a group of) site/s to a new website.
